Accused of being rude by a buyer

Options
Just had an offer of £17 on an item listed for £40. Decided it wasn't worth counter offering as our prices were way too far apart- so declined outright.
A few minutes later had a message saying 'a bit rude mate' so I have blocked the buyer.

I don't think I was rude at all, just practical, making an offer that low must mean the buyer wasn't in the least bit interested in actually buying my item.

I have taken quite low offers in the past, but not that low and personally I think it a bit too cheeky to be taken serious.

I would have done the same and just declined but if I do use offers now I tend to set the minimum offer level to try and avoid silly offers.

I've also had a few counter offers accepted recently then not paid for, which is very annoying when selling on an 70/80% off fees day
  • I had a similar response when i received a message which simply said "Buy-It-Now?" on an auction, even though my auctions cleary state I don't accept BIN requests, so just responded "No". He then responded I'd lost a potential buyer and should work on my manners, whereby I said he should work on his reading and blocked him. The item sold and I worked out later he had got his missus to buy it, as the address i sent I to had the same surname as the ebay name of the person who messaged me (it was an unusual surname to,  so didnt think it could be two unrelated people).

As a buyer i really appreciate this being placed on items.
It shows, immediately, whether i'm able to haggle with this seller or not and negates all of the above situations.

I think I'd have replied before blocking

"Yes a £17 offer on a £40 item is a bit rude mate, I agree. Have a good day"

What exactly was your response to the £17.00 offer?

I always put a minimum amount on offers so a £17.00 offer on a £40.00 item would have been automatically declined.

For some reason I hadn’t put an automatic decline limit on this one, hence the offer getting through. So all I did was hit decline, no comments, no counter offer, nothing, just the decline button. (Exactly the same as would have happened if my automatic decline  response had been on). This was instant as well, my phone buzzed with an offer and I hit decline.

You obviously weren’t rude, but you are taking this incident a bit more seriously than it deserves.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
  • People are odd. I think it has got worse since Covid. But even before I think selling or even giving stuff away is open to unusual behaviour. Try not to let it bother you. I think offering less than half the asking price is pretty rude but that’s just my opinion.
