mobile phone insurance

I recently bought a new handset from currys. It was quite expensive so I want to get insurance on the phone.

Anyone have any tips on best place to get insurance for mobiles?

  • If your phone was to break, can you ‘happily’ afford another one?

I.e. would forking out for another one be detrimental to your finances? If not, just self insure.

Many device/appliance specific insurances are such a rip-off.
can afford another one but I spent £650 on the handset so I wouldn't be able to afford such a big figure again/

    What about go compare options?

Does you bank offer anything? May be as part of a bundle of services that if you also have a use may be worthwhile.

you could consider a package current account eg Nationwide which for £13 a month gives you phone, car breakdown and travel.insurance

obviously may not be what you want of course

would it be covered on your home contents insurance, probably worth checking before forking out.

As @mortgageFTB suggests you could put away the monthly cost into a savings account and self insure - that's what we do.

However that said I wouldn't dream of paying £650 for a phone, around £150 is my limit.

One thing with insurance is to check what happens if you claim.

Do you get a replacement or a repair? If it's a repair or refurbished do they use original parts or compatible parts?

How much excess do you pay?

Other factors to consider.  Do you look after your phones? Are you clumsy? Do you do unsafe activities? Do you take it out and then drink heavily?

If like me you take care of your phones, don't drop them, don't have them on me when doing activities and don't get drunk then self-insurance is probably a good idea.

If you're like my friend, who keeps his phone in his back pocket, is clumsy and takes it out drinking then insurance can be a good thing as he'll likely need to make multiple claims.

It's amazing how much mobile phone damage is related to excess drinking. It's not the drink but the behaviour that goes with it.

If I Google "compare mobile phone insurance" all the usual suspects come up.
