Osma bottle gully has missing insert

Ever since moving to this property there's occasionally been a bad smell from the outside kitchen drain. This autumn it's been particularly bad, so I decided to investigate and the reason is simple - there's no insert sleeve in the bottle gully so there's no water trap sealing the connection to the foul waste inspection chamber.

The gully is made by Osma (110mm) and installed in1986. From the arrows and wording moulded into the main body of the gully, the insert sleeve appears to lock in place by partial rotation.

I was hoping this design was still marketed, but appears to be out of production. Ideally I would like to get a replacement insert rather than replace the gully entirely, as there is a significant setback to doing this; The previous owner of the property worked for a ready-mix concrete supplier and had unlimited access to concrete and encased the gully in a large block for more than the full depth. The pipework is also encased. This would be difficult to remove - especially so around the connecting pipework to avoid any damage.

Another approach would be to fabricate an insert using flat plastic sheet cut into a ring with a solvent-welded stub of pipe to dip below the water level in the trap. This could be fitted in place and sealed with a bead of silicone to allow future removal. I've also looked at other makes of trap and the inserts all seem to vary with manufacturer and unlikely to fit.

Does anyone here have ideas on fixing this problem?

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Any chance?

Can one of these parts be of any use?

  • Here's a picture. The inside bore is approximately 170mm diameter and tapered towards the bottom. The function of the ridged section isn't clear, as the bottom of the ridges coincide with the height of the outlet and I haven't found a picture of how the original parts fit together.

I don't know about the assembly in the link - will need to get some measurements to see if it can be adapted.

  • Thanks. What's the major diameter and overall length?

Approximately 170mm diameter, and 216mm deep.

I have one the same.  The baffle sits behind the two 'fins' inside the gulley and is secured with a screw in the hole at the 7 o'clock position in your picture.  (the arrows actually point to this screw, rather than indicating the part(s) should be rotated)

I'll take some pictures in the morning and post them here.

This is what the baffle looks like. It has a large rubber doughnut washer to effect the seal. Retained by a screw in the top, and I think a recess near the bottom of the gulley. I don't think it would be easy to make one.

(Falling over myself in admiration for the likes of FreeBear and S62 on this forum. Even more enhanced by the unavoidable fact that they don't 'alf get on my boobie on occasion - I guess it's called 'personality' :-)  )

  • Ah. I never would have worked out the construction without those pictures and I very much appreciate the effort. Also thanks to FreeBear for the offer, but I think I'll need the original part. Feeling about in the bottom of the gully suggested there may be something else going on due to the ridges.

Now I have a clear understanding I've sent an email to Osma so they can see what I need, or let me have the original part number to help track one down.
