Eight-year-old Henry loves Christmas. He can't wait to post his letter to Santa up the chimney. But his cranky neighbor, Miss Broom, wants nothing to do with the festivities.

Henry tries all sorts of ways to decorate Miss Broom's gloomy house, even sneaking down her chimney. There, he dislodges a charred and tattered old letter. It's from a very young and lonely Miss Broom, asking Santa for a friend to play with.

Henry realizes that Santa never received the letter, so Miss Broom never got a friend. Determined to help her discover the magic of Christmas, Henry sets out to put things right.
