Getting a second policy

hi guys Hope you all good. my question is, we have a ski holiday booked for December 2023 and already have holiday insurance that has ski cover. sadly my partner has just be diagnosed with bowl cancer and our cover doesn't cover the full cost of cancelling. would the Wife be able to take a separate cover for her and our daughter 18 years old and son 14 years old and clame on that policy? hope you can help

  • The insurance policy has to be taken out before the insured event - in this case diagnosis - happens.  Usually the policy will say how long before the insured event you have to have held the policy for.

You cannot insure for an event afterwards. That's paramount to fraud. Which would cause permanent life long damage to your wider financial standing.  Is making a claim worth the risk? Judgement call is all yours.

Are you sure it doesn't cover the full cost? For example, if the 4 of you are taking a holiday that costs £4000 and your policy is a family policy with £2000 cover, that is typically £2000 per person, so your overall cover would be £8000 (4*£2000) and you could claim the full £4000 (less 4 excesses).

Do you mean you plan to get an extra policy, then cancel for everyone now due to the diagnosis, and claim on both policies? --> Then no, the 2nd policy would only cover events that happen after the 'problem' ie cancer diagnosis.

Or do you mean that partner will cancel, covered by the insurance you already have. The rest would buy new insurance and go on the trip to, with the insurance there as contingency in case something new happens?
  • I thanks for your reply. I get I would not be covered but the new policy would just be for my wife and kids so could they claim on not being able to go because of my condition? I don't intend on claiming on both policies just the new one to cover the rest of my family

Sadly That not how insurance works.

It covers you for something that might happen, not something that has

Hi. The new policy would just be for 3 and not me but would there new policy let them cancel because of my condition or as I would be on it they wouldn't let her claim?

Hi. The cost of the holiday is £3800 and policy covers 1000 each minus 150 excess so doesn't quite cover it. But keen to know if my wife took a policy without me would they pay her as I'm not on it? Thanks

I wouldn't be claiming after the event but wife takes a separate policy for her and kids but would they let her cancel due to me not being on it

Its fraud if you take out an insurance policy with the prior intent/knowledge that you are going to claim on it
