How much to spend - am I being tight?

Trying not to sound mercenary here, but do you think she'll be spending around that amount on you? Perhaps you should develop "expensive tastes" to even it up

Seriously, if she's got anything about her, she won't care about how much you spend on her just as long as you put a bit of thought into whatever you buy. The saying "it's the thought that counts" really does ring true.
My boyfriend and I just buy each other a few little presents at Christmas, probably amounting to about £30 each. Christmas is expensive and stressful enough without going overboard IMHO.Wins since 2009 = £17,600MANY THANKS TO ALL OPS0 -
£180! Wow I think you are very very generous. If my OH spent that much on me I'd wonder what was going on!
She is a very lucky woman and if she is so ungrateful as to express disappointment tomorrow then maybe you should re-evaluate your relationship.
PS How much is she spending on you?0 -
£180 is very generous.
I have already received my Christmas present - husband was so excited he couldn't wait to give it to me (OOH matron!!). It was a leather goth coat - absolutely PERFECT present - reduced from £200 to £100 in the early sales - last coat I bought was nearly 8 years ago!
You could always make a few presents that don't cost you anything/much - like printing out pictures of you both and writing a romantic message on the back, wrapping chocolate up with pics of her favourite band on the front (keeping the foil on the choc but wrapping the printed pic around it).All credit cards paid off.

You spend only what you can afford with thought and love and she should be happy.Theres a lot of media hype that only very expensive pressies will do for the one you love. Cobblers!!!!
My DH & I spent masses on each other when we were first together but then we were earning lots to.As times gone on 2 kids and many changes of life later Im happy with little things like 5 books from a second hand book shop by my fave author hes delighted with a nice black lace thong (I wear it;) ):rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:Some of the best lessons we ever learn,we learn from our mistakes and failures.the error of the past is the success and wisdom of the future. :j0 -
What does she expect? what have you got her in the past? If you normally spend £500 on her then yes, she will be disappointed. Bad luck on the high maintenance.
Maybe now is the time to put things in check.
Take this from a man who's spent £4.5k on an engagement ring this year. hehe, it is nice though. Thankfully, other than holidays she's low maintainance0 -
get a refund, buy me a 45 quid guitar pedal and I'll go out with you instead

seriously though, if she really cares about you she should (IMO) be more disappointed that her present made you go into debt than that the present wasn't expensive enough.Win 2008 in 2008 member number.....237!!! Won so far: £0.00

I hope you haven't gone out and bought anymore, especially on your CC. I agree with everyone else, you spend what you can afford whether it is £1 or £1000 and she should be grateful that you have put in the thought in. Merry Christmas.0

It shouldn't be about the amount you spend, but the care you take in choosing the pressies. If she's all about the amounts it's very sad imo:("You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf"

I've been reading through your other posts and this is all very sad

I hope you haven't spent anymore, you've already spent more than enough and if she doesn't appreciate then so what? You don't sound very happy with her and I hope in the new year you get the courage to do what is right for you.
I spent 6 years in a crap relationship, didn't have the strength to do anything about it for a long time. I left in the end and it was a struggle to be a single parent, but I was happy! No more being taken for granted, just the freedom to please yourself at last
I have been with my (new) fella for 7 years now and we are happier than ever, we treat each other with respect and love and that's the only way to live Jon.
Be strong! Peace to you x"The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too."- Samuel Butler0 -
OH and I live apart, so we did Christmas at the weekend instead.

We both spent a fair whack on each other (nowhere near £180 though!) and although I loved every single one of his presents, the one that meant the most to me was the one that he made himself. It can't have cost more than a few quid in materials, and it's not perfect, but I can tell he spent a lot of time on it and it makes me feel really special.
If £180 is not enough, there's something wrong.
I hope you have a Merry Christmas regardless.
