Is it the fridge that's gone or the freezer?0

The first thing to do whenever you have issues with a fridge or freezer is to give it a thorough clean.Empty it out, defrost it. Clean the inside, make sure the drain hole in the fridge is not blocked. Make sure the door seals are spotlessly clean - it only takes a small bit of muck to prevent it sealing properly.Make sure everything is nice and dry, switch it back on. Many times this will cure the problem - and it costs nothing to do, so there's nothing lost by giving it a try.Whilst you're at it, check the door seals themselves. If they're split/cracked/damaged then that can cause problems. But they're usually a doddle to replace yourself, and you'll find any number of online suppliers to buy a new seal from - more often than not, it doesn't even need to be a genuine Hotpoint part.If you still have issues, then it can be a little more tricky to achieve a DIY fix. It may be a dodgy thermostat or compressor - not too difficult to replace, but it's a waste of money to buy a new thermostat, for instance, if it turns out not to be the cause. But start out by giving it a clean and checking the seals - that's a nice easy and cheap DIY fix to try before you go to the expense of calling in "a man". On that note, if you do need outside help, try and find a local "domestic appliance repair" person, there are usually plenty of them around. And they'll likely be a darn sight cheaper than a Hotpoint engineer.0

It's both such which aren't working I've tried cleaning . It doesn't have a thermostat just buttons at the top supercool and super freeze options and other setting for temperature selection. Is it worth leaving fridge off 24 hours and doors open if anything needs defrosting
Hotpoint say £140 fix and 6 months any other faults covered too0 -

There's certainly nothing to lose by giving this a try.wakkaday said:Is it worth leaving fridge off 24 hours and doors open if anything needs defrosting
That actually sounds not too bad a price, if that covers everything. It still may be worth a quick call to a local independent if you've got one, just to get a comparison.wakkaday said:

ok i'm back...
so the hotpoint engineer after a few attempts and weeks of waiting say the device cant be fixed
system is blocked and i need to get a new frdige / freezer
so they have regassed it and replaced compressor - the freezer works but the fridge doesn't cool
is there any DIY steps i can do before throwing this fridge away - i dont trust the engineers neccessarily as they work on time/comission etc0 -
Does the fridge have its own compressor? on our last Hotpoint F/F the cold air from the freezer was blown up thru ducting to the fridge ,once the Hotpoint engineer took out the freezer drawers and then the back plastic cover ,removed all the ice and the fridge was better ,this was done under warranty.0

I did tell the egibeer to check the fan etc but he said it's not that and just said it's blocked system and wanted to leave - annoyingly . It out of warranty.I have a feeling the fan section is broken or it's something in that freezer compartment panel that isn't pushing cool air up ...
inhave previously taken a look, I may again to see if I misssd something but I didn't see any ice clogged0 -
I did mention to the engineer that there was not a lot of cold air blowing into the fridge from the freezer and he said that modern fridge freezers just bleed cold air off the freezer into the fridge so only need one compressor ,this makes them more energy efficient ,he also said that if you hold your hand next to the cold air vent i the fridge it will only be like an old mans breath ( his words ) not a blast of ice cold air.wakkaday said:
