Closed credit card and refunds

During the past year, I have closed a credit card account and had 2 moved to new providers - keeping track of the numbers is a tad tricky. I took out a magazine subscription, but subsequently decided to cancel and was due a refund. However, refunds go back to the original payment method. Despite advising I no longer had that particular credit card, the seller said that the refund had been accepted so I had to take it up with the bank. Now ... which card; which bank; do I not have the account with now! Finally found the relevant numbered card and then had the task of trying to contact a bank (no human being to talk to obviously) about an account I no longer had with them. Usual press this that and the other on the phone, but they still had my details and matched my mobile number. There was already a refund on the account from months ago which the bank had not contacted me about, nor did they send a cheque to my home address on record. If I hadn't checked, this earlier refund would have been lost. Beware as you may have money lingering somewhere which the bank just holds onto without letting you know.
