Vulnerable unemployed son able to get credit card!

Not paying can & possibly will lead to not getting a contract in the future. Even sim only over a fixed period can/will lead to a credit check.
Not paying can lead to a world of pain for him going forward.Life in the slow lane1 -

Many people live happily without mobile contracts. There is PAYG and there are auto-renewing bundles with very competitive prices, e.g. at Lebara. I don't remember all details, but one of their selling points is "No Credit Checks".1 -
The issue remains that he is an adult and appears legally of capable of entering into a contract.
Has he agreed that you can help him? If so, he could call or go into a branch to explain his situation with you. They may be willing to freeze or remove interest/fees or accept a repayment of the principal sum borrowed.1
