our local tesco Extra had already removed a lot of the xmas stuff form the shelves especially in freezer section, was in just a few end sections by 1pm. They had returned a lot of the fridges back to the pre-xmas state and didn't look to be putting out much extra

Silly question of the day..... Do most supermarkets close at 5 today?

It varies, some are 5, some are 6 - again it pays to have done your research before hand to know which store opens/closes at what time on which days - those little leaflets they start dishing out in dec with their trading hours are very useful - stick them on the notice-board/fridge. You never know when your cream will go off, or you will run out of milk, so always be prepared for emergencies.
Congratulations to me :D First time EVER I have left it this late - but I bagged a gorgeous Turkey in Sainsburys this morning. Overhead supervisor telling sa to reduce the Turkeys by half, and I managed to get a lovely one, already stuffed and dressed and oven ready. Still not cheap, but was half price, and will save me all the mess and stress;)
No doubt I will see dozens later being given away, but I feel really pleased with myself for keeping my nerve and getting a bargain. Good luck to everyone else.
I have managed to get most of the essentials, so anything else I get will be the extra treats .
p.s Thanks to all staff working in supermarkets today - you are all saints. It is as manic today as it was at the weekend, and it must be hell to have to work another long shift. I picked my 'chosen' Turkey, asked sa if she would be reducing it, she said yes, so I said, could she do this one for me now then......and she did. Saved me hanging around half an hour while she got round to that section of the fridges, and she already looked shattered.

Does anyone else get totally pi**ed off when they see stuff they have paid full price for going knock down cheap? not just food - but all the things you have got as pressies for others and can't leave to the last minute.

Not really. If you are really desperate then you will always pay the full price. IMO patient is an "MSE" virtue. I am not too fussed whether i get something on time or a bit later. We live in a society that dictates how we spend our money. If you don't buy prezzies for christmas you are labeled a Scrooge. I have some financial difficulties at the moment, and therefore cannot afford full price for all goods. Instead, talked with my gf and decided to buy presents to each other on sales. Why would I pay £100 for a jacket when 2 days later I can find exactly the same for half price.

:o However, one exception might be if children are involved, where I will have to agree with you, as it is a bit unfair to let them down on Xmas day.
Going to war over religion is basically killing one another to see who's got the better imaginary friend...

Carpe diem --> Seize the day :rolleyes2

Of course I do, but that (plus financial necessity) if why bargain hunting is not just for Christmas, but for life.
Shopping for Christmas 2008 will start in the Jan sales for me - and judging by some postings, other have started already.

Christmas presents do not have to be an item bought 3 weeks before, encased in Christmas packaging and labelled December 2007. Necessity is the mother of invention, and I much prefer to receive gifts that thought has gone into, rather than just a last minute, 'what was left on the shelf' type of gift.

But saving money and getting bargains is very time consuming. People who have the money to burn will probably be tucked up in front of the telly, everything ready and wrapped......while us lot are out in the cold and the dark trying to make a silk purse out of a sows ear......but not doing too bad a job of it I am proud to say.;)

Just back from my local Tesco, lots of bargain hunters but very few bargains. eclairs at 20p and that was about it. All the cashmere stuff which is half price online (and out of stock) was only reduced by a few pounds.

you are not kidding. Was in Asda an hour ago, poor lad comes out with about 8 baskets (in 2 piles of 4) of discounted meats only to be what I would put as being a severe invasion of his personal space, the women were pushing him out of the way, lifting whole baskets and tipping them into their trolley. Animals !

There's money saving and there is taking the mick.
