New vehicle insurance

Hi,
I’m struggling to figure out what to do, and hoping someone can give some advice.
Basically I’m buying a new car soon as my current car is on lease and I’ll have to return it end of Feb 2024.

Basically I’m buying a new car soon as my current car is on lease and I’ll have to return it end of Feb 2024.
I’m currently insured on my lease vehicle with my partner as a named driver. Our plan was that once I bought my new car, my partner would continue to use the lease car until it is returned.
Would it work if I stayed insured on the current car, if he then gets insured on my new car until February and then cancel that policy. Then I would change vehicles details on my policy to the new vehicle.
Does that even make sense? I have just been looking into it and am now worried it would be classed as fronting or something. Also worried we would be stung for cancelling a policy just a few months in?
I have looked at temporary insurance but it’s ridiculously expensive (almost as much as a year for just 1 month)
We will probably both drive each car for different journeys (because of the mileage restraints on the lease car), so does it really matter who is the main driver?

You haven't made it clear for how long you plan to have two cars?
The problem of becoming a two vehicle household is that if its for a material length of time you will need two policies and the new policy will have to be bought with 0 NCD as its currently in use on the old car. If it's a short time it may be better to add the car onto the existing policy as a Temporary Additional Vehicle.1 -

I wonder if it’s acceptable for my partner to be solely insured on my lease car, or do I have to still be the main driver? If so he could take out insurance on the lease for the remainder and I could just change vehicle details on my current policy. That way I’d still have my NCD.

Lease/finance companies don't like fronting, where one person is the hirer/debtor but the car is really for the benefit of someone else. This however is normally when this is done from the outset and was always the intent for it to be the other persons vehicle. I suspect they'll have less problems after X years if the main driver changes for the last few months but if you want to make sure then contact them.Jrdck said:

An insurer won't care as long as the owner, keeper, main driver etc are all declared correctly2 -
A helpful insurer might allow you to have one car as the main car on policy and the second car as a "temporary additional vehicle". A period of several months might be too long? If they agree there would definitely be a cost.
