eBay verification

"Looks like you're using a different computer. Please verify yourself", says the message when I try to log on to eBay. I'm not using a different computer, nor a different browser. To verify I have to call a number that looks like an Italian number. What is happening here? I've never had this before. Is there any way to get past it?

    I wouldn’t be calling any number. Is there a possibility you’ve been hacked?

    Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

    I'm with @elsien, definitely calling a numbers to verify is not usual protocol - them sending you a text message with a code number to input into your login page would be. (i.e from a bank when you authorise a payment etc).

    @tenchy what's the update on this ?

    I think the request was genuine. After a couple of attempts to get past it, the verification message changed and wanted me to call a US number and quote the reference number provided on the screen. This was even when I tried the link provided above by Elsien. After yet another attempt they then wanted to send a OTPC to my phone. Trouble was, they were trying to send it to my works phone number, but I was at home.

    Anyway, panic over. I left it for a couple of days, and I've just been able to log on without a problem - no requests for any form of verification. I'll stay logged on now.

    Maybe eBay have introduced some new, over-the-top type of verification. Who knows? Funnily enough, I've just had a similar issue with LinkedIn. It's been over a year since I last logged on and now they want me to verify myself. They want a copy of my passport uploaded!!! No chance!!! These organisations really annoy me. They expect us to trust them without question, but on the other hand they consider us untrustworthy by default.
