Backing up documents in Windows 10

I have a Windows 10 HP Envy laptop upgraded with a 500gb SSD of around 2017 vintage.
Reading in computer magazines about backing up your data they never seem to mention the built in back up in Windows 10 of File History. I use this to back up my documents every week or so and as far as I understand (which isn't very far tbh), it backs them up incrementally to an external hard drive, (ie only re-backs up ones that have been added or altered from the last backup). Is that correct?
I also use Mail Store Home to archive / backup my emails on the laptop (still using Windows Live Mail for this as its what I'm used to, and it works for me).
I suppose I'm asking if these back up methods are ok or are there better ways of doing this. I'm only really interested in backing up my documents and emails. Programs I can always reinstall if needed.
Many thanks.

And if you set up your email using IMAP instead of POP3 then it all stays on the server as well.0
