Not Happy with Home Emergency Cover

Something I have discovered is commonplace is emergency home cover is often not worth the paper it is written on.
Had a pipe leak in the bathroom and upon phoning under the emergency cover of my insurance with Admiral was first of all told they had no one available for that day to come out, then was told that certain pipework was not covered, no way I could tell what was leaking so they suggested at my expense to get a plumber to come out and find the leak then if it matched the insurance parameters they would go ahead with a £500 excess and do the work.
Not prepared to lay out £700 I went ahead and got a plumber out who fixed the leak and replaced a corroded pipe for £170, what is the point of emergency cover when they can't define the problem without you paying for an inspection and the ridiculous excess, I understand that these excesses are now beoming the norm, what is the point of this type of cover? and Admirals lack of help was woeful and I wont be renewing with them.

I had a different experience with a leak (unfortunately not discovered until it had done some serious damage to our wooden flooring). Direct Line had a plumber out within 24 hrs and fixed the issue.

Certain sorts of risk are best covered by self-insurance, i.e. saving a small amount each month (think of it as the insurance 'premium') so that you have most or all of what you need to hire someone who will come as quickly as you need them to and fix the problem.
