What are they doing? When i needed my valley concreted again a few people quoted £1000 and that was with small scaffolding to the front, the guy I went with did it on a ladder for £300.
Depending what he is doing I guess you can establish if the price is fair with the scaffolding now needed or not.
If he quoted £1000 for a job that should be £300 without scaffolding then he's taking the p**s asking for more money but if he quoted £1000 for a job that would be £1000 without scaffolding and now he needs it, then I would be inclined to think he's not trying to rip you off. Depends what the works he is doing is in my opinion.

Not having a go at anyone in particular, but it always strikes me as odd when a fixed price quote for a job suddenly isn’t fixed price when extra work is required. What would happen in reverse?

This new 'scaffolding' that's required - is it a tower like in the original quote, or full-length scaffolding?
You can buy a tower for £1200. And, if he's a roofer, then surely he already has one...

So here is the new quote, followed by the original quote.

The second quote includes work not mentioned in the first - in particular the resetting of a ridge tile.  Working on the ridge is an example where it may be necessary to use full scaffolding rather than a tower/ladders.  It is plausible the need to reset a ridge tile was only noticed once work had started.

Is the £1200 in the second quote in addition to the £950 quote, or does it replace it?  It really isn't clear what work they are doing and what has changed (see my previous comments about communication).

    Apologies.

The second photo is the FIRST quote we received. This was in response to us sending him the surveyors report which I will attach below.

The first photo is the work he has done and the revised quote. He has actually done the ridge tile.

Original quote was £1200 for all work listed - revised quote is now £950 for the work done.

So he has taken off £250, however there is still a lot of outstanding work, probably the biggest work of the list.

  • Well they should do the work agreed at the price agreed.

It's always difficult with building work as souring a relationship could result in bad work.

Scaffolding isn't extra work. If they can't safety do the job and now need to hire it then i feel that's different. Scaffolding is expensive.

Sounds like the OP got a quote unseen though and turns out there is way more needing doing than originally thought.

We've agreed to pay £800 as we realised some of the guttering he said he'd done he hadn't.

I asked for the certificate of guarantee and he's sent me a certificate with no date, no signature, and I asked for it to be dated and signed and he just said that is how I do my business certiciate.

    Definitely not using him again.
