I have MacBook Pro IPad and iPhone

Never had a problem updating any of them, they all sync seamlessly

I got caught out because I keep my macbook in 10.14 /Mojave as I've tons of 32-bit software including office, so I got caught out.
Feel like a chump. I'm always warning about the backwards -incompatablity of MacOS upgrades but it never crossed my mind that an iOS upgrade on my phone could cause similar problems.

  • Is this connected with 'suspended' apps?

"After you've switched to a different app, some apps will run for a short period of time before they're set to a suspended state. Apps that are in a suspended state aren't actively in use, open or taking up system resources. With Background App Refresh, suspended apps can check for updates and new content.

If you want suspended apps to check for new content, go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and turn on Background App Refresh. If you close an app in the App Switcher, it may not be able to run or check for new content before you open it again."

Since I have owned an iPhone almost from when they came out, plus I have 96 apps on my iPhone and basically the same on my iPad

I can honestly say that except for when a major software update is downloaded from Apple I have not noticed apps updating and my phone is with me 24/7

I rarely have a problem with any of my Apple  devices, iPhone iPad or MacBook
