    Ah! Good point!
MrS, you'll have a magnetic filter fitted? Could you check that to see how much, if any, sludge has been captured? That should give a very good idea of the state of your system.
Yeh I've got a magnetic filter fitted.

Would it have captured much if I haven't really had the heating running since install?
Took my magnetic filter off about three months after the boiler was installed - Had told the "engineer" to mount it to the side of the boiler, not underneath where it would be difficult to access. Guess where he fitted it....
A small amount of sludge had been collected, so the chemical clean hadn't done a thorough job. Filter has been refitted where _I_ wanted it, and will check for sludge again in the spring.

Yeh mine is underneath. If that's gunked up already would cleaning it solve my issue? Or am I just checking to see how well the chem flush has worked?

You are checking to see how much sludge is left in the system - Even after a chemical flush, I would expect there to still be some sludge lurking in the bottom of a radiator or two. The water being pumped round the system will pick a few bits up, which the filter should trap.
If the filter is clogged up with sludge, you need to have some stiff words with the plumber and get him back to do a flush properly.

As FreeBear says, it's no surprise to find a small continuing amount of sludge residue being captured over months, even years - it's doing its job.
But, if significant quants are being collected, then that indicates - to me - that the chemical clean has been largely ineffectual.

Took the magnet out and fkushed the filter through.
That's the first couple of litres that came off.

That last image is just the magnet that sits in a tube inside the filter. To see how much sludge it has collected, you need to close the valves either side, and then unscrew the body (put something underneath to catch the water). The sludge will be stuck to the tube the magnet sits in.

There's only one valve and that's the return to the boiler.
But the first picture is what flushed out from the filter when I removed the magnet and opened the valve at the bottom. Does that look about right?

No, it looks dirty. Not very, but not clean either.
I'm familiar with the Magnaclean models, where the magnets are in direct contact with the water, so the sludge will be adhered to that actual magnet - that can be quite visually dramatic.
We cannot see the actual sludge content from yours, other than the way it discolours the water.
System water - on a properly cleaned system - should be clear, or with just a hint of yellow/brown colour.
It's hard to judge how bad yours is from that pic - possibly not very, but possibly not good either.
