Are you wanting to preserve just what is written or the handwriting itself?
Personally would probably scan both sides, of the scan of the back use a photo editing software to increase the canvas size 100% vertically and paste the front scan on it. I'd probably keep both the front only and the front + back files as if you want to reprint or just look at the photo thats easier done with the front only but you've got the commentary/handwriting saved for the occasions people want to see it.1 -
