Council Parking ticket wrong Reg Number

Hi, just hoping somebody can advise me about a parking ticket that I have got today. I’ve parked across the road from my house - off road in a small side road that I believe is private. I parked safely I thought, have done so multiple times there as have others everyday (there is one safe space - I thought- that gets used by us all living in this road. Perhaps my car was a little bit forward this time into what might be thought of as footpath. There is a sign up for parking restrictions between 9 and 5 for the road that I didn’t think pertained to this side road.
But - my question is two fold - have I dive wrong, and what happens if the PCN is made out incorrectly - they mistaken changed a W for an E in my registration plate.
Will they pursue it? Should I contact them and share that they made an error. Will they find me somehow through DvLA?
Any advice? Thanks so much.

As we major on private parking tickets here, PePiPoo will be your best bet for council tickets. Register there but please note that a Hotmail address won't work - try using a throwaway Gmail account instead if you do have trouble registering, and post a new thread; here's your link:Read the sticky 'Read this before you post' as well as reading through some of the other threads there ahead of posting your own details, to get the hang of what information they need from you in your opening post - but as a minimum you will need to post redacted photos/scans of all correspondence you've received from the council (both sides, if appropriate), as they need to see all the small print. Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .
I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.

Wrong registration is fatalYou can either:
a) Do nothing, in which case the council will send the Notice to Owner to the registered keeper of the reg no. assuming that the reg no. on the pcn actually exists. This means that the true owner will have the aggravation of trying to sort it out
b) (Recommended. The council's mistake has handed you a get-out-of jail-free card, so it's only right that you don't land the unsuspecting owner in a pile of trouble not of his making)
Write to the council enclosing a copy explaining that you found this pcn on your vehicle but the vrm on the pcn does not relate to any vehicle that you own.
The council will realise their mistake and cancel the pcn. (they cannot re-issue a corrected pcn). This means that the reg keeper will not have to deal with a pcn which they know nothing about and of which they are entirely innocent.
Make sure you keep the pcn safe (just in case the council try to issue a corrected NtO.)

Thank you both so much, I will write to them over the weekend - thank you again @Orford and @Umkomaas, really helpful to see what might be a safe way forward. If I felt I’d really parked wrongly I might have been willing to somehow pay it, but I can’t help but feel the ticket was unjustified, though proving that would be hard I think. Thanks both 🤞MiMi66 ☺️

Just to update and say thanks again. I emailed the council and explained the wrong registration number on the PCN - happily they agreed to cancel the ticket. They explained why I had been given one which I’ve asked for more clarity about. The space is one that my neighbours and I have used for a long time, years, and I’m just not clear what we have done wrong parking there. Another neighbour got a ticket today in the same space.
But right now I’m grateful for not having to pay it as I just picked said car up from garage post service and two new tyres and a coil spring = £730…… gulp.
thanks again for the advice! 🚗🪷MiMi66 ☺️
