Car Tax V5C/2 reference number invalid.

Options
Hi all,

We have purchased a car over the weekend. Private sale. The seller updated online to the new owner - ourselves - after we completed the payment. We are looking to pick up the car and want to tax it. When we go online, it states the 12 digit reference is no longer valid and we need to wait for the V5C/2 to arrive here. Never had this before. Any advice?

  • Do you have the green slip from V5.
If so take that, mot & insurance to a post office.
Get the tax there and then.
    Job done.
    Drive home happy.

Unless the OP is in Northern Ireland, proof of insurance isn't needed, and  hasn't been for about 10 years.

Better safe than sorry, tank everything.
I’ve taxed mine online for the last 7 years.
I tax it on the 1st of December for the 1st of January.
Very upset the year as going from £30 to £35.
    What a rip off  B)

New V5C had already been issued by the time you went to tax it making the V5C/2 invalid - you can check issue date on the .gov site https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/.  If doing everything on line you need to tax it almost immediately.
When I bought my current car the V5C arrived after 3 days.

  • I was able to get the car taxed at the local Post Office. Thank you for all the help.
