Safely remove hardware icon

I have just fitted a new DVD writer and a had a few problems getting it to work, now it is working I have noticed the safely remove hardware icon is showing. When I click it, it shows my DVD writer in the box and wants me to stop it so I can remove it safely. What's going on?

Just rebooted and it's still there, not a big problem but it's bugging me. I appreciate your help though, thank you.0

some workarounds here, not ideal, but will probably get rid of the icon

I seem to get this icon randomly with pieces of hardware on my laptop but not on my desktop .. sometimes its there others its not0
