I have just had a very long and frustrating Chat with Barclaycard about my wife's inability to see our Barclaycard account in the Barclays App. Apparently it is a Barclaycard policy for the lead account holder only to see the account in the app for "security and safety" reasons!! As I tried to explain, my wife has her own card and makes her own online, contactless and ApplyPay transactions so she should as a minimum be able to view her transactions to check for any unusual activity? The irony is that the account was originally my wifes as was the Barclays account before we got married. As soo an it was made joint I was automatically made the lead account holder despite it previously being her account.Rant over!!!
Are there any credit card accounts, preferably Visa that can be "Joint" or at least have joint access to the online account and statements etc. Perhaps finance rules stipulate that a "Credit" account can only be in a single name for debt accountability or can a married couple be jointly liable??
Many thanks
Fozzie

Only Amex as far as I know.

But there is no Joint credit card accounts. Only one account holder. So no joint liability. In fact you are liable for ALL additional card holders spending.

  • Can she apply for her own card either with Barclays or any card provider?
  • Can she not just login to your Barclaycard desktop account and you maintain the app version?
If you believe you can, you will. If you believe you can't, you won't.

    Secured/Unsecured loans x 1
    Credit Cards x 8 (total limit £51,300)
Creation FS Retail Account x 1
    0% Overdraft x 1 (£0 / £250)
    Mortgage Outstanding - £138,087.38 (Payment 11/360)
    Total Debt = £1,125.00 (0%APR) @ £112.50pm

This makes no sense.  A current account could be your wife's and made joint, but not a credit card account. It's solely yours, not joint, and you can add additional cardholders to it. I have two of them, and possibly can add more.
I haven't tried, but I believe you can have Barclaycard app on several devices. Most likely it's against the T&C, but if you don't care your wife can use your credentials to use it. If she has her own sole Barclays current account she can use Barclays app for it.

  • You can have joint current/savings accounts and both have access or make transactions separately. But, as for Cards, it's one primary cardholder and he /she has access to online viewing. I don't like it but who are we mortals to challenge the banks who rule us so much ?
The obvious way round this is for your wife to have all your log in details and to just use them as she wishes to view the account online.

The correct way around this if you need that level of real time information is that you both have separate credit cards rather than an additional card to the main owner. Sharing login details would be against their T&C's.

AmEx is only half the way there... the additional cardholders can only see their own spend not the total for the account

In the UK there are no joint credit cards, having not worked for a bank for many years I have no idea why and don't have access to the kind of person that may actually know the answer. I've been told before that the law/regulations don't allow it but no one has been able to point to which law or regulation that prohibits it.  Clearly other forms of credit (loans, mortgages, overdrafts) are able to be on a joint basis so not sure what would make credit cards different.

In other countries, eg the US, joint credit cards are available but allegedly represent a tiny percentage of both the products on offer and the cards in circulation. It therefore may be less of a regulation thing and more of a lack of demand.

You are presumably advocating the OP giving their log in details to their spouse so they can log into the OP's account on their own device. Generally that is in breach of the T&Cs and you could find it comes to bite at some point in the future (eg if you allege fraud and then have to answer "yes" to the Q about sharing your log in details/PIN with others)

That said, many bank advisors actively promote breaching account rules like password sharing or using a personal account for a sole trader business etc.

That is my take on what the Op wants.

  • This is only a guess but I think the reason there always has to be one main cardholder is because in the event of default it could be complicated to pursue multiple parties, therefore it's easier to have one person responsible (liable) for the account.
