Worth moving boiler?

  • Yes I think you are right. I want the bathroom to work and to leave the boiler in situ will always be a compromise. Also, as it is our only bathroom at present, I could install the shower without too much disruption to the rest of the room, and get that up and running before tackling the rest. It was just more money than I expected, but in the scheme of things it gets me what I want.

I will have a conversation with the heating engineer about future plans though in case he has an alternate suggestion to save money down the line.

The three main points to look at are -
    1. Location of the gas pipe. Gas enters the property in the utility room, directly below.. Also, when we move our kitchen, the engineer has confirmed the gas can be teed easily to the new cooker location.
    2. Proposed flue exit point in relation to doors, windows, and boundaries. The quote specifies something needed for the new flue to make it compliant. I forget the name but it was discussed in detail.
    3. Suitable switched fused spur in the utility room. We recently upgraded the consumer unit (also in utility) and the electrician is aware we were thinking of moving the boiler, and said that bit would all be fine.
I do all the other radiator and pipework myself and will be doing the bathroom on my tod, so for the boiler pipework I would probably just get it all done, knowing I am saving labour elsewhere. I trust this engineer, having used him for various bits over the years and (although not MSE), I am not planning to shop around for other quotes.

Thank you all for indulging me in my ruminations!

Plume kit could well have been suggested.

  • That's the one!

Well, we've just had confirmation of a surprise lump sum pay rise which will cover the cost of moving the boiler so things may be aligning. :-)
