First direct android app

I have suddenly lost on line access to my FD bank account as they have up dated their app. I just get a message that I must update the app on my phone. The problem is that the new app requires as a minimum android 9 and my phone is android 8 and cant be updated - I have tried before when I wanted to get a Chase account. Whilst this is probably not a common problem I feel that FD must have been aware of the possibility and warned of the likely chaos, not to mention the cost of a new phone, that could ensue.
Has anybody else come across this problem and found a solution?

Android 8 has been out of support for 2 years. It‘s unsafe to use, particularly with sensitive apps like banking. The solution is to upgrade to a supported OS/phone, or you could revert to online banking if you have another device which runs a supported OS.

As above, you should not be using any financial applications on Android 8. It has known unpatched security issues.
The solution is to upgrade the phone to one which is safe to use for this purpose. It needs to be getting security patches as a minimum and running a 64bit version of Android.0 -
All phones will become out of date, at some point you will need to replace your phone if you want to be able to use the latest apps. You can't get around that.

Solution is to either buy new phone or as @grumbler & a physical Secure Key instead.
You can get a Android 12 phone for around £70 on Amazon.
Could also try the likes of CEX for some with at least Android 12 for a few years security before needing to upgrade again.
Switching banks is not going to solve the Android 8 issue. They will all drop it soon.Life in the slow lane2 -
Problem with a cheap Android 12 phone is 1) it may only get 3 years of security updates which means it becomes a liability again in 12 months time 2) it may not be a 64 bit OS if its a basement phone.
You need to look to see how long it will be getting both OS and security updates for and that it has a 64 bit OS.0 -
A year or 2 ago, my secure key device died. I phoned FD to get a replacement. They suggested it would take a few weeks to arrive. They suggeste I switch to their smartphone app. They promised I could switch back to the secure key device if I didn't like the app. I did like the app so continue to use it.My point is before making any decisions on which way you access FD, check with them to see how long it would take to receive a secure key device. Hence how long before you had access to your account barring phoning them for every query/transaction.0

Has anybody else come across this problem and found a solution?I have the iOS app and it can only work on one registered device at a time. So I have it registered on my iPhone and it works on there. The app also downloaded to my iPad. But it does not work on there. In Apple world, I think I would have to have FD de-register it from my iPhone and re-register it on my iPad if I wanted to swap devices. Does the same thing apply to Android devces?0 -
Yes, you de-register it from the Android device to be able to install and register it on another.
You can get it de-registered via the contact centre if you can't do it on the phone.1
