How do I play .avi files?

I've downloaded a vlc player, I've downloaded a codec pack and I still can't get it to play. This is just turning into too much hard work for me:o Help, anyone?!?!

vlc should play it straight after installation without a codec pack.

if the video is in a too high resolution than your computer will play, it wont play. i found this out after recording something for my mate and only nero showtime could open it with it flagging up a warning

I've tried that, it's not having none of it. I think I'm gonna just have a reboot and see if that does anything.

You don't need all of that stuff. Just an MPEG 4 codec. Remove other stuff, download and install; Nic's XviD Codec

    An alternative: Koepi's Xvid Codec

There are many players about but they all rely upon having the correct 'codec' installed.

Try this player, in my opinion it is better than VLC, Media Player Classic etc

  • sounds like it might be a problem with the file you're trying to play? Where did you get the avi from? It might be corrupted

  • There's a tool called gspot that will identify the codec a file is encoded in and tell you if you have it

    http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

Try that and see if you've got the right codec

Agreed. Its a very useful tool.

To be honest a codec pack is probably unnecessary for most people and they can cause more problems than they solve. I've found ffdshow to be a very useful "codec" which will play the majority of video files, and it can be downloaded here http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow
