Amex application

Just an FYI for those considering applying (given the additional promotional rewards currently).

As part of my plan to increase the diversity of my portfolio of rewards CC's I decided to take the plunge and apply for the Amex Preferred Rewards Gold CC (via friends referral) after eligibility checking on their own website (9/10 chance).

Application was very straightforward, a few questions about employment etc which I hadn't done on other CC provider applications and then a screen that presented me with the option of how I wanted my name displayed on the card and to choose my pin number. At this stage it said the final decision couldn't be made just yet, so i continued with name selection and pin then it came up with approved and card is on its way. interestingly there was no mention of credit limit at all anywhere, nor on the subsequent email received either.

Had instant notification of hard credit search on Credit Karma app the moment I clicked submit.

So, in summary, easy process, had a decision in minutes. The only thing I did which I didn't have to do but was intrigued is call Amex to find out what my CC limit was.

In my experience Amex told me my credit limit when my application was approved ( last Amex card I applied for was the BAPP in Jan 23) it appears the process has changed.

Assume they could tell you when you called them?

  • It was the first CC application i've done whereby I wasn't told my limit either prior as part of the eligibility check or after full application. However, within 3 minutes the customer service agent told me my CC limit which I was....very happy with.

Just need to wait for the card to be able to Activate my online account. It's a shame you can't have a virtual card to make payments with whilst waiting for the physical card like some CC providers (NatWest for example).

You won’t have to wait for long, as they seem to be one of the fastest providers to post out a physical card. My Amex PRG limit is almost comically high compared with my other credit card limits, I wonder if this is usual for them?
  • I have heard stories of people receiving their cards within 48 hours to be fair. All depends on how well the RM are operating!

Agreed, it is by far the highest limit in my portfolio and quite frankly going to be utilised under 10% for the most part!

I remember my platinum charge card arriving the very next day after my application… I was as gobsmacked as I was impressed.

My two Amex credit card limits are very generous too but my highest limit on a single card is still my Tesco card.

Amex gave me a generous limit compared to income a few years ago. My income has gone up along with my limit but it’s sat at £10k now and I’m thinking about reducing it to be honest. I rarely ever get anywhere near that and think it probably puts off other providers if I wanted a new card for whatever reason elsewhere. But always found Amex to be fantastic at customer service

YMMV but high limits on one card has never stopped me from getting high limits on new applications ( although varies by lender ). In fact it’s almost as if a new lender checks my file and sees a high limit and pretty much matches it as if to persuade me to switch my spending to them although I’m sure this is just coincidence.
