I have seen an advisory on ebay for "Original number plate" - Different number plates are commonplace.
"Ensure the number plates on the car match the V5C documentation. Be sure of what number plate comes with the car you are buying."
Is this something to worry about, never seen it before?

It's not something to worry about, just a very basic check when you're buying a car.

FWIW I'd like to see some evidence that they're "commonplace".

If I were to buy a van, I would consider buying a quirky private plate.

It's likely to mean the vehicle has worn a private plate at some point in its past. So although it might be a 2008 Ford Focus - it might not always have displayed its original given plate of AB08ABC for the life of the vehicle. If the car happens to be a more prestige brand, it tends to be more likely (but not exclusively) that at some point a private plate would have been fitted.

So it's saying if you go to look at the car - make sure you get the V5 that matches the current registration plate, as when you get a private plate a new V5 is issued, and when it's removed, another V5 is issued.

    Mistakes happen

I remember buying a new car (not private plate) and the front plate was different to the back, same letters and numbers but different order

I never spotted it a friend did  months after I had bought it
