Halifax BCR xxxxxx

This post is on the behalf of my late Mum. Unbeknown to myself my late Mum had a Halifax Liquid Gold Account which was later changed to a Saver Reward Account.Over the years, she had been receiving letters from the Halifax saying that it had been over 15 years since she last used her Saver Reward Account.Because of her age and poor health she was unable to visit her local branch to keep the Account open. As timed passed, the Account and funds were securely moved to the Reclaim Fund Ltd. Moving forward to the present day,my Mum passed away on the 30thJuly 2023. I spoke with the Halifax Bereavement team on 0800 096 4319 and gave them details of her death certificate. The Account had been found by mylostaccount .org.uk So with all this information at hand they issued me with a BCR number consisting of 6 numbers. This took place on the 7th September 2023. I was informed that I should allow 15-30 working days for the funds to be transferred to the bank account of my choice. I have spoken to the Bereavement team 3 times since that initial contact. It would appear that transfer of my Mum's funds HAS NOT taken place. This has been confirmed by the bank of my choice. The team I have spoken to can ONLY confirm that the funds have already been reclaimed. They have no details of the transfer which includes the final amount, when the transfer took place and to what account. They have sent a urgent message to their back team, who would have all the details of this transfer, for them to ring me about this transfer. If the details are available I cannot understand why this 'back team' has not been in touch before now. Any information on how to go forward with this subject would be very much appreciated. I was informed by the Bereavement team that there is no way to contact this so called 'back team' Regards Peter

    Sorry for your loss.

It's not clear from your post when, i.e. how long ago, you were told that the back team have been asked to ring you.

If it was only a few days ago I'd suggest the best advice is simply to wait. And if nothing happens for a few more days remind the bereavement team again.

That might seem unhelpful but if something has gone wrong with the transfer only the bank can help sort that out.

(I assume that amount isn't massive, otherwise they'd be wanting probate before passing it on to you?)

Thank you Zanderman for your reply to my post.. I last spoke with the Halifax bereavement team on Friday 27th and they said I should hopefully receive a call back within 24-48 hours. If I have not had any contact with them by the end of the day on Tuesday I will be ringing them again on the Wednesday. The balance of the account is £5657.67. It is the wording of Funds Already Been Reclaimed which is causing me the confusion.

Does the 'reclaiming of funds' refer to Halifax retrieving them from Reclaim Fund Ltd (into some sort of temporary holding account within Halifax) perhaps, rather than actually making them available to the beneficiary at another bank, which will be a separate step?
  • This is the wording of the letter my late mum received. QUOTE Thank you for asking for a search of our records for accounts opened in the above name, we've found the account. The account was closed under our inactive procedures, in which accounts that aren't used for over 15 years have their funds automatically transferred ( securely ) to the Reclaim Fund Ltd. The money remains yours and you can claim it back at any time. To proceed with reclaiming the funds, you need to contact staff at our Halifax branch at xxxxxxxxxxx.END QUOTE. I got myself involved because of my mum's age and ill health. It was impossible for her to visit the branch to resolve this matter
  • If the funds have already been reclaimed, then I am trying to find out who the recipient is and the bank details that has received my mum's savings. Surely that is not too much to ask for.

As above, my assumption would be that the money will temporarily be in an internal suspense account of some sort within Halifax, prior to being paid into your account, in which case there wouldn't really be any merit in trying to track down exactly where it is as such, it's just a case of seeking information on when it'll reach its final destination.
