Temporary Sealing around chimney pot ?

Be grateful for any advice please.
we have water standing under one of our ground floor rooms it is coming from the cavity wall with our neighbour, we know it is weather related, ( not the water table)
had various tradesmen out with different theories so investigated them all.
the chimney pots have a hairline gap around the base that is going to be flaunched in a few weeks , the roofer says he very much doubts that is causing our problem but the work will get done.
my question is is it possibly to use a type of all weather sealant as a temp measure around the pots to stop any possible water coming in and to rule out that is the source of the water,
there are no fires in use in the house
thanks

I don't see why not. Even bluetack can work, let alone any silicone, roof sealant. Butyl or flashing tape is more proper material, but is hardly woth wasting money on it if it's a temporary measure.jhe said:

Thanks grumbler that is helpful.
Our regular Roofer can’t come to do the job for a few weeks yet . I trust him to do the job 💯 correct.
I am thinking of seeing if i can get someone to do a temp fix to rule out the chimney because various tradesmen are now saying it is coming in from next door under the cavity wall !
despite asking them numerous times if they have a problem I get no response other than we will have a look under the floor !
can’t take it further till I rule out the chimney and with all the rain lately I spend my days hourly emptying water from under the floorboards
