Income protection/Critical Illness??

Insurances I have no knowledge of and unsure where to start. Unlike car insurance and life insurance, they seem to have many exclusions so it makes me question “are they worth their weight?”
Went back to my skilled trade after 18 months of going the self employed route. Currently working as a contractor through an agency. Waiting for a permanent position but a recent merger and the aftermath of customers over ordering during the pandemic has kept the recruitment freeze in place.

Regardless, there is still a 3 year wait once permanent, to be eligible for sick pay. So I need some protection should the worst happen.
Any advice is very welcome.
Thanks!

Some of the budget ones are pretty useless but most of what they say they will do. You just need to decide what level of quality you are after.
And for reference, car insurance and life insurance has varying quality too.
