@cerebus please at least do your research before posting.

The heat issue is simply true

On the instructions the picture could not be clearer, it shows a 4W mini globe LED and it's pretty obvious to anyone with any sense that is what the designer intended to be used.

Finally, if you missed it, the OP is using a CFL lamp they found lying around somewhere in their home.

The CFL will quite likely be 'fine' - you will 'get away' with it - but it will still emit more heat than its LED power equivalent, and provide less light output. If Slinky likes the effect, and he is confident it runs no more than luke-warm, he can make the judgement whether to carry on using it.

I've put my fingers on the bulb when it's on. It's warm, but not hot. It's absolutely nowhere near burning hot. Certainly not like the old incandescent days.

In which case it will be absolutely fine. (Unless it goes faulty, but that applies to LEDs too...)
This is all about heat. I believe I can say with complete confidence that the lamp holder and the cable are pretty standard, and could handle a 40W filament bulb with no issues; only the shade would be damaged. Certainly, your 7W CFL won't bovver it.
I imagine that CFLs are just not referred to as an option these days, as they are rightly outdated.

In the product reviews, purchasers are not happy, because the lamp is much smaller than expected. It's just a lamp made to the cheapest specifications, I certainly don't share your confidence that a 40w bulb would be ok.

To be clear, I am saying that the bulb HOLDER and the power CABLE will almost certainly handle a 40W filament bulb, as no-one would use thinner/lesser wire/contacts than this for a mains-powered lamp. That is just nuts.
But it should still not be done, since the SHADE would not handle the heat. I was just making a point - and in no way suggesting to 'go ahead'!
Yes, there are a number of unhappy buyers, because they seemingly don't know how to use a tape measure...

No it's as clear as mud.

Again would you jump off a bridge if the instructions told you so or would you use common sense?

Everybody else here can see what the issue is, only you seemingly cannot

Final word from me on this, I've had an electrician in today doing a couple of jobs for me, so of course I asked him about the lamp. He checked there's a 3 amp fuse and said the 7w cfl will be absolutely fine.

Well, yet another idiot IMO. Fuse protects the cable and has nothing to do with the bulb. 3A fuse means 700W. Ha-ha.
I wouldn't laugh if he just looked at the lamp design and said his expert opinion without checking the fuse.

It suggests the cable and fittings is more than up to a 3A loading, so the wee 7W CFL jobbie will be quite happy. As would a 40W incand. Or a 400W halogen.
Except the shade will have melted, which is essentially the only issue here, not an 'electrical' one.
