Sending courier to collect item left at hotel

Any suggestions for a service to collect an item left at a hotel and return it to me in the UK? It's in South Africa, so I don't suppose will be that cheap, but the item is valuable. It contains lithium batteries so I suppose that could be an issue. Maybe just DHL?

Thanks

Would the hotel be able and willing to send it for you, if you cover their costs for doing so?

Lithium batteries certainly could be a major problem.  I found this on the IATA site.

Baggage equipped with a lithium battery, other than lithium button cells:
    • If the baggage is to be checked in, the lithium battery must be removed from the baggage
and the lithium battery must be carried in the cabin; or
    • The baggage must be carried in the cabin.
    • Baggage where the lithium battery is designed to charge other devices and cannot be removed
    is forbidden for carriage.

First contact the hotel to see if they have the item. If so then check the rules on shipping lithium batteries from SA. If you took the with you out there then I am sure it should be ok. Hopefully the hotel have things in place for situations like this and you can just pay them whatever the fee is.

Rules of what can go into the cabin of an aircraft and what can go into the hold are different, I doubt the courier will send someone to sit on a plane with the item in the cabin! Would need to be a very valuable item to warrant that level of service.
  • Are the batteries expensive items ?
If not and can be replaced here - it might be an idea to ditch them in SA to avoid the transportation safety issues.

Yes but if they passed through security on the way there, they should be ok to be transported safely in the other direction is my point

If he took it there with him, he  may have had it  in the cabin as instructed.

Any courier service is not going to provide someone to take it in the cabin.
