Tin openers - made to fail?

I had two of the one on the right and it was only last week that I binned one of them - the plastic bit that's over the winder split but that was after many years of use. They're cheap enough to buy and have a relatively long life span. As a back up I also have one of the "stabber" versions although I do get somewhat nervous if I have to use it!Be kind to others and to yourself too.1

If the problem is bluntness, then sharpen them. But not catching can often be a rivet or screw that needs tightening. Or occasionally a badly formed can.

Had a look and it's even less than I thought!! £7.99!!! What makes them easy to use is the great big turny bit. Even my elderly inlaws managed with one of these.

We had an old one that became blunt and I've no idea how you would sharpen one so we replaced it with an Oxo Good Grips one. That was a few years ago and whilst we don't open all that many cans it has lasted well and is easy to use.

That stabby one was in my childhood home before we got one of the OP's RH ones. It was scary and downright dangerous.

turnitround said:I have the one on the right, it used to belong to my mother in law who died in 1989 and it is still going strong.
It broke yesterday, the little wheel came off.
I like those, because they don't leave any sharp edges, so the dog can lick the tin clean0 -

Have you tried scrubbling around the wheels, dip in bicarb, spray on vinegar, toothbrush and dental floss.
Could be some food sprayed in around there and hardened.
Even a spray of wd40 after and wiped off.
You can clean the cutting edge with a nail file, 2 for a pound in a pound shop.I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!
