SAGA House Insurance renewal

My mother in law was insured with SAGA on a fixed three year House Insurance contract paying approximately £273.00 pa. The renewal came through for the new 3 year fixed price at £1,387.76 pa - obviously a total shock and without my intervention her dd's would have increased to the new amount. I checked SAGA online via comparison sites and a higher level of their home insurance came out at £360. When I queried with SAGA they told me that the quote via the comparison site had a year of build as 1964 whereas their renewal had a year of build as 1066! I think SAGA are playing games! How could they have the build date as 1066 when this was a renewal generated by themselves with no input from myself - are they saying that 3 years ago they were insuring homes built in 1066? Scandalous! I have now gone elsewhere and will never go back to SAGA (even though they offered me the renewal at £185.00 in the end) BEWARE - I thought SAGA were meant to be looking after our older generation!

My Saga renewal also came back super inflated and I too have gone elsewhere. Maybe they'll get the message - we may be old but we're not stupid!!!!

The schedule for the last policy will state what year of build they are holding. If it is wrong then clearly they can correct it and requote the renewal.0

What does the existing policy schedule say as far as the age of the building? iy would have been provided for you to check 3 years ago. If that does say 1066 then yes, that is what they were covering. If it doesn't, but the renewal you would have received (to also check the details) does then something has gone wrong.0

Been with saga for some years- for an ordinary 1915ish 3 bed semi, occupied by me and my husband, both retired. Lived here 40 years. No claims. This year the renewal from 1/11/24 has doubled! From 314.41 to 628.15! How can this possibly be justified!? When I cancelled after finding much cheaper alternative for £296 there was no explanation or regret from Saga. 😟0

Who was the insurer/underwriter last year? Who are they proposing to underwrite it in your renewal?
1) Home insurers had a terrible year last year having both summer droughts and winter wet/cold claims, many have increased prices
2) Two insurers have exited the UK Home market which may have been on Saga's panel; if you happen to have been insured by one of these then you will have the double whammy of having to move to another insurer who were less competitive for you last year plus the increases above
Ultimately there is no commitment on either party beyond the year you sign up for. At least there are other insurers still offering competitive terms for you. Being in a more unorthodox position I have a choice of one high street insurer or moving up to the MNW providers who add £1k to my quotes... thankfully their increases have been modest recently.0
