Not sure how much difference it ought to make anyway if your claim has nothing to do with the roof.
CIDRE doesn't require the incorrect disclosure to have anything to do with the claim... if they find out you've made a dishonest or reckless wrong declaration they can void the policy at any time. It's just more likely that issues with the declarations are spotted at claims stage.
lets hope it doesn't get to that stage. Voiding my policy means I have to report it when I get a new one and I have no idea what consequences that will have.

I can totally see this happening if they had to pay a significant amount of money but this claim is rather small ... 2,000 ish

Generally, not being able to buy from many mainstream insurers and seeing prices triple for not great policies

This is obviously causing us great concern - and the insurer and underwriters are taking their sweet time. On top of this the report from the insurance adjuster who wrongly claimed 100% flat roof but I guess that's easily disputed.

So I did something cheeky perhaps.
I went to the nationwide home insurance website and requested a quote for my home, specifying 30-50% slated roof and got back with a formal quote ie was accepted

Is this proof that Nationwide would have insured me anyways and the accidental misrepresentation, guided by misguided questions, had no bearing on whether I was insured or no?

Its hopefully a strong indicator that if they accept it wasn't intentional or reckless then you'd be keeping the policy but maybe the claim is reduced to represent the difference in premium the question would make

to be honest at this point id be happy to go and pay for the repairs myself. I only went the insurance route as it was my first ever issue in an owned house and had no idea how to proceed or who to call.

Got a call from Nationwide that really distressed me. They wanted to know why I lied when I took on the policy. Again they pedalled the 100% flat roof nonsense from the adjuster.

I told them about the fact it's 35% and that I read the question and said: I have a roof with slates so yes, it's standard construction.

The person told me I should have clicked no and answer the rest of the questions but how can I click no I the question was misleading? Ultimately they said I'm an adult that should have read all the questions.

They said they'll now inform the underwriters and they will let me know their decision.

From my part, should I start a formal complaint against them?
I'm collecting questions from other insurance quotes but ultimately I don't know what to do.

Wait to see and log the complaint if you are unhappy with their decision.

The problem with their site and non-standard question set is you don't get to see the other questions unless you answer a particular way.

yes and by surveying most insurance providers I can see how good their application process is, very clear and self-explanatory. AXA for example is one such examples. Others are as bad as Nationwide, e.g. AVIVA.

The worst part is that I didn't even shop around. My first ever mortgage was with Nationwide and because of that I went directly to nationwide home insurance thinking it was the easiest path to home insurance. Naive I suppose....

Thanks for your advice and comments..

Very inclined to make a formal complaint. It has been 10 business days already and total radio silence from them.
