Reclaiming back VAT when returning item to EU

I've purchased an item offer £135 which was shipped from the EU and so I had to pay VAT and Excise duty when it landed in the UK. I have to return this item but would like to claim the duties I have paid back if this is possible.
I can imagine the kind of documents I may need but does anyone know if this can be done and what the process would be for it please?
Many thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.
