I went on chat with British Gas yesterday and was told I had the option of three tariffs:
I think I'm looking to fix for peace of mind so will probably use the cooling off period to end this tariff but I'm interested in why it has an end date if it's just the standard variable tariff. Thanks.
1) Standard Variable Tariff v14 which is the cheapest one ,
2)VEPC OFFER STANDARD VARIABLE TARIFF V14- The tariff you are currently in
3)The Fixed One v25
He gave me the details for the first one, I saw it said there was an end date of October 2024, forgot about the "variable" aspect and assumed it was a fixed rate tariff. Now I'm looking at the details and there's no mention of it being a fixed rate so does anyone know why it would have an end date please? It's also the same price as the second option, even though he said it was cheaper, but that's beside the point. Here are the details:

Just so it has an end date on their system, nothing more. It has no practical meaning in reality.1

The end date just makes sure the tariff is not available beyond that date. I recently switched to BG Fixed Energy V31. I did the calculations, and although it will cost me a little more each month I prefer the certainty, especially given the uncertainty in the global energy markets right now.
Kind Regards,
