Toyota Yaris exhaust muffler heat shield has been removed. Is this MOT or safe?

Options
Hi all, I have a mk1 Yaris and noticed a rattling noise coming from the exhaust that became worse. Took it to a local garage today who simply removed the heat shield and told me it is okay to run the car like that. They didn't charge me anything so I didn't question further and drove off.

Is this an MOT failure and what are the risks of not having the heat shield on the exhaust muffler?

You’ll be fine, the Yaris is well known for not requiring parts that are essential on other cars such as rear brakes.
  • The risk is a bit more heat transfer to the floor of the car above the silencer in question. Not a big issue in the UK - remember they spec cars for 40+ degree climates.

I presume on these the cat is in the downpipe, so it's not that.

I thought you'd sold the Yaris to buy a 911.
Have you had the front brakes sorted yet on the Yaris?

Is that your local mechanic who looks after your Porsche?
Maybe he took the part off to fix your Porsche?

Was your mechanic able to find the engine ok?  I know he gets confused easily.

I'd have thought you had bigger problems to worry about with getting your Porsche sorted than a simple heat shield on some old Yaris.

@raptor2004   likes to cruise slowly and doesn't care much for performance or ragging it like a boy racer, losing the heatshield won't be a problem
  • "muffler", are you in the U.S. of A.?
Just wear thick soled shoes and you will be fine.

..it's probably a good idea to ask them to remove the brake pads as well...that way they will never wear out and you will never need to replace them...

  • thanks anyway but spoke to a few people and shouldn't really be an issue

Just for the avoidance of doubt here - the heat shield on your 2004 Yaris seems to be more of a priority that the myriad of problems you've had with your Porsche?

Speaks volumes about where the truth lies.
