Short story - son has been let go from his apprenticeship/full time job whilst doing a level 3 one year course.
Today he applied for JSA - not sure he is eligible and I did a UC calculation. The calculation also gave him a discounted council tax (for which he doesn't pay as a third adult in our house)
Im not well versed in JSA - is he likely to be eligible, should I get him to apply for UC.
On the calculator I had his rent as £120 which is what he was paying per month board to his mum. Although he has little outgoing he does have a mobile phone contract.
Any other advice would be appreciated.

As he's only 18 it's unlikely he will have the correct amount of NI contributions in the previous 2 tax years to be entitled to New style JSA.Assuming he's not a full time student, It will be Universal Credit that he will need to claim. As he lives with his mum then he will not be able to claim for help with any rent. He will also not be able to claim any Council Tax reduction. As he's under 25 then he'll be entitled to £292.11/month UC.4

Would he be better off seeking work even if just to tide him over for the Xmas period? Loads of places are looking for temps for Xmas and are advertising but also (no idea what his apprenticeship was in) lots of labourer roles going on building sites etc if that's his preference to retail/hospitality .peteuk said:Short story - son has been let go from his apprenticeship/full time job whilst doing a level 3 one year course.

Which would be plenty for him to pay his £120 which is remarkably cheap to cover all his expenses bar a phone.poppy12345 said:As he's only 18 it's unlikely he will have the correct amount of NI contributions in the previous 2 tax years to be entitled to New style JSA.Assuming he's not a full time student, It will be Universal Credit that he will need to claim. Yep, which he is doing, obviously we will sort out his phone but he’s used to having some money coming in.HampshireH said:

I thought that this would be the case, but wasn’t 100% sure.poppy12345 said:As he's only 18 it's unlikely he will have the correct amount of NI contributions in the previous 2 tax years to be entitled to New style JSA.Assuming he's not a full time student, It will be Universal Credit that he will need to claim.
