Energy Bill - anything to worry about?

Hello

I’m wondering if anyone has experienced this and if it’s anything I need to worry about.

We moved into our home 2.5 years ago, the previous owner had owned it from new and had died and we’ve never received any mail that isn’t addressed to us since moving in. Until about a year ago when we started receiving mail for another person from EDF. We returned to sender until one my toddlers opened one and it was an overdue bill will our billing address, a name I didn’t recognise (not the previous owner) and a different supply address in a nearby town. I called EDF and they stopped the letters.

It’s happened again, a different name, our billing address and a supply address in Cornwall (we’re in Somerset). It’s worrying me that it’s some kind of fraud or something suspicious is going on if someone keeps giving our address as their billing address.

Obviously they aren’t addressed to us and I will keep returning to sender and intercepting my children from opening them 🙈. But is there anything I need to worry about here? Can’t really face hours on the phone to EDF trying to get it sorted.

Thank you!

Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • I would agree with putting something in writing (email is fine, as long as it's to a valid public email address) so you have a record, but functionally no - you don't need to worry.

As long as the letters have someone else's name on them and you are confident you are paying the bill for your house correctly then you've done what you need to in informing them that they have the wrong address/it's nothing to do with anyone living at your property.

Debts belong to a person, not an address, and properties can't be 'blacklisted' - so the issue for you is that it's a nuisance. If it's enough of a bother you can make a complaint and escalate to the ombudsman if not resolved, but I'd just put them in the bin.
