Quick piece of advice, we have a 22 month old Springer Spaniel. She was on Purina Beta Puppy up until 1 year then Purina Beta Adult since then. She got a bit picky with a month back but is back to eating it all in both meals (morning and night).
However, I have been hearing much comments about Autarky food for working dogs. 100% natural and no GM ingredients. I have spoken to a couple of pet shops and they all talk highly of it. They also say that Purina Beta is a bit 'over-pumped' full of additves. She does run non-stop when out!
Anyone used Autarky at all?0 -
The following is the given ingredient list for Autarky adult - the ingredients run in order of quantity - the largest first - so maize is the biggest percentage and so on - note that prairie meal also appears there - and this is another name for maize gluten meal - which tends to hide the fact that there is a lot more maize than anything else. Interestingly they specifically list "EEC permitted anti-oxidants" in a "natural" feed - as these are usually BHA and BHT ( chemical antioxidants), and with a list of the natural antioxidants afterwards it just makes me a bit wary. You pay your money and you take your choice, but it's better than Nestle Purina and their policy of doing experiments on animals. At 22% protein it is still a bit high for an average adult pet dog though. I'd also want to know the quality of their chicken meal too - feathers and beaks and feet can be listed as chicken ... and at that price they have to be cutting corners somewhere along the line.A natural, premium quality, wheat gluten free ration which has been formulated for working dogs. Containing: Maize, Chicken Meat Meal, Rice, Chicken Fat, Prairie Meal, Full Fat Linseed, Peas, Alfalfa, Sugar Beet, Yeast, Carrot, Leek, Tomato, Herbs, Blackcurrant Extract with EEC permitted anti oxidants: Mixed tocopherols, Vitamin C and Rosemary Extract. Protein: 22%, Oil: 12%, Fibre: 3.0%, Ash: 6.0%, Vit A 15000ii/kg, Vit D 1500iu/kg, Vit E 220mg/kg0

Single wardrobe turned on its side or a sideboard from junk or charity shop, topped with tarred roofing felt, makes excellent rabbit hutch if your bun needs one.0

Well went to my local pet shop (inside a Wyevale garden centre) and they also dissed Purina Beta. Hi Sugar, cereal biggest ingredients that dogs dont digest to well and pointed out that protein was just from a meat derrivative (anything!)
They did not stock Autarky.
They did try and sell me Nutro dog food. £39.99 for 15kg was too much for me. They were poiting out its biggest ingredients is dried flaked lamb and you dont need to feed as much as it is so high in meat and not cereal?
Our springer eats 400g of Purina Beta a day, more than the recommended but she burns it off. If she only ate 100g a day I would have no problem paying £40 a sack - you can see my point.
Neither our vet or ourselves are happy with the state of her teeth. We are putting this down to the hi sugar content in Purina Beta.
I would welcome your opinions. What complete dried dog food should I switch to.0 -

She has had all the blood tests done at the vet and they are all clear se we are all at a loss to know whats causing it. She suggested giving her a premioum dry food such as Hill which they stocked. as the price was so high I wanted to look around and got some JWBL from Pets at home. She is sort of eating it but not over impressed
It may not work but i read that if you pour a little boiling water over the dog food and leave it to cool before giving it to your dog, it releases some of the odour of the food and makes it a tad more desirable for your dog. I dunno if it works myself but its worth a try. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Hi there
visit www.petdispensary.co.uk I have searched the net for the best prices for flea/worm stuff and other pet medicines and this site is amazing, the prices in some cases are half of what I was paying at the vets! Cheaper than the other sites mentioned above also! Free post and packing on orders over £10 also - definately recommend!0 -

Try contacting Burns
I always used to feed my cats on tinned with some dry (for their teeth), one had dry skin (look a bit like dandruf) & vet advised putting Evening primrose oil in the (wet) food, which I thought rather unfair on the other cat - they eat from whoever's bowl has still got food. I looked up food online & discovered Burns. Both cats are much healthier & happier on it, the eldest now hunts again (thankfully he does it when I am asleep or not at home) & the younger one's dry skin is no more (also she is much more affectionate/playful). If you email them you will v likely geta free sample.

It also worked out cheaper! Get a measuring cup 2 ensure you don't overfeed (free from yr local vet). As I live in a flat I also saved time/money on litter (less of it/less smells too). Do ensure that they have lots of fresh water to drink tho. Good luck, lots of other online sites sell it too - I have tried other dried foods, foils & pouches but the apart from it being more expensive the condition of my cats is far better on Burns. I do give them the other food sometimes as a `treat': like when I'm going away but more often a bit of roast chicken as I know what has gone in2 the ingredients.
For some reason there is much more variety of Burns for dogs. Imagine that this works just as well for them0 -
Hay fever ....... Hi Lil_ me i recently took my dog into the vets as i suspected he had been stung bu a wasp or bee, i had given him a bit of anti- histamine but the vet says it dosnt work on dogs so i guess that if your dog has hayfever the alternative medicine might be the answer but not many insurance companies deal with them. I know that horses get hayfever especially with oil seed rape. Hope you find an answer for your dog soon but adding Zinc to his diet may alleviate his symptoms as it did for my horse.0
