Evening All, we are moving out of the UK back to Europe. We have 9 years of NI contributions and would have worked 9 months from the 10th year before leaving the UK. I have the following questions and your help would be greatly appreciated:

1. What do we need to do in order to receive some portion of our tax in return for this year as I understood that we are eligible for some tax money back as we would have paid 9 months taxes at our full year rate but not worked the whole year? Please someone to clarify.

2. Would we still receive a full 10th year of NI contributions even though we have only worked 9 months?

3. If we claim back tax for this year, is this going to mess anything with our 10th year of NI contributions?

Thanks in advance.

I'm going to request that this is moved over to the 'cutting tax' board, but can have a sort of go go at answering your questions.

    1. You tell HMRC that you are going to move / have moved abroad permanently by filling in a P85 form, including details from the P45 you'll get when you end your employment here.
Tax if you leave the UK to live abroad - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

    2. Will depend on how much you have earned and how much NI you have paid over the year and what your pay frequency is. It's perfectly possible to be credited with a full years NI without actually working a full year but the devil is in the detail.  As you may already realise, it's  important that you get that tenth year as you now need a minimum of ten years to be entitled to any UK State Pension.  As far as I'm aware you'll only be able to see if it's complete after your records get updated after the tax year end - so around Autumn 2024. If not full, you should be able to make a partial payment to  fill it.

  • Thus is what is required to be completed when leaving the U.K.

Claiming back tax has nothing to do with your NI record.

    All good advice from poohsticks.
