Any experience of buying in France for holiday home & holiday lets?

Currently let out our flat in London, value circa £550k with around £375k of the mortgage paid off.
Fixed rate is up in Jan 2025, and it's a right pain for us at the moment, we lose money on it once income tax and maintenance comes out of the rental income.
Considering a few options, and one is investing the £375k or so in a home abroad to use as a holiday home & use an agent to let it out 40-45 weeks a year when we don't want it.
Depending on the region, €400k gets you a 5-6 bed place with a pool and a giant garden or even a Gite from my preliminary research.
Got twins incoming, so a holiday home is much more practical than hotels all of a sudden, and I like the idea of being mortgage free and still being able to earn profitable income from the property.
Can only really find information online from agencies who manage properties, so only seeing their side of the story, has anyone got any recent experience of doing this that they can share?
