Thank you everyone, it felt difficult because we were in a rush.

I also trawled through the Law Society list of local firms, looking at their Google reviews & sought quotes from some of them, and contacted other companies in our immediate vicinity.

However, I spoke to an extremely helpful person from a quotes site who went through each of the quotes and how each company worked.  This was helpful as not all companies have this information easy-to-find online.  They assured us that none of their companies outsourced (some customer reviews had said this), 'though one had a group of different solicitors, one worked in another country but were UK-run, and 2 were traditional "in house" firms.

They also advised me to run the quote again to see if it came up with any more companies, which it did, the company which was next on my 'Law Society local list' to contact. with very good reviews, so we're going with a locally-based company which also came up on a comparison site and has a choice of local offices.  Decision made, phew.

Thank you again everyone for all your input.
  • Never choose conveyancing based on price alone. The worst conveyancers know that people like cheap prices, so they go cheap. Always cheap for a reason.

You won't know how good your conveyancer truly was until you try and sell /remortgage.

    Use Reviewsolicitors as a website.

Never use a middleman, always employ direct.

Thank you everyone, in the end I contacted the comparison site who were really helpful, refreshed the search as advised & went with a local company (not the cheapest but not twice the price) through them; they are so far acting faster than the seller's solicitor which is a local company who'd quoted us more than twice the price, and their communication has been very good.
