Got a new ev and looking to change tariff

I asked my electricity and gas supplier to give me an ev tariff quote. Below what they told me I would get if I sign up. Then I realised peak times are a lot more expensive than what we are paying now. I have 3 adults at home who plays games on consoles and work on 3 computers running peak times. I have dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, oven running peak times. I drive 250 miles a week on my ev minimum for work related reasons and rest going to shopping etc. Is this new tariff beneficial for us? I think we are better off staying with our current tariff. What do you think?

Current tariff
26 64p/kwh Electricity
6.832p/kwh gas

Quote we received

Tariff Name: Next Drive Fixed

Electricity Day Unit Rate:32.174 Pence Per KWH

Electricity Night Unit Rate:9.500 Pence Per KWH

Electricity Standing Charge:57.031 Pence Per Day

Gas Unit Rate:7.115 Pence Per KWH

Gas Standing Charge:29.112 Pence Per Day

Yearly Estimated Amount: £4124.82

Octopus Go would be the cheapest option provided you have a compatible car/charger (7.5p per kWh overnight for six hours, day rate varies by region). If you can shift things around so that the dishwasher and washing machine can run overnight you will save even more.

What is your current usage in kWh for both gas and electricity and what EV have you got, so we can estimate EV running costs (kWh per mile as well as charging efficiency).

    Rubbish - Move supplier!

    Octopus Go (North West)
    9p for 4 hours 0030-0430
    30.23p "peak" hours
    49.77p standing charge

As well as their other tariffs if you have a compatible charger or are will to risk the variable prices on Agile Octopus that changes every 30 min

You can't move the oven time easily, but if you can move some of the other big loads like tumble dryer into the cheap hours. Most appliances have time delay functions on these days to make shifting quite easy
  • Bearing mind you don’t say who your current supplier is, nor how many Kwh you currently use, look at other suppliers for their quotes, but tell them what your current power requirements are, Then can you shift any load e.g. EV charging to overnight, not sure about dryer though, also do the northern thing have dinner at “lunchtime , and have tea at “dinner time” i.e. peak-times. Your usage appears quite but that may be on your supplier’s guestimate

Thank you for the replies. They estimated our usage as well. Here is the full quote. We are on eon next variable rate currently. My car is Peugeot 2008e. Thanks
    Your consumption;

    Electricity 10158.4 KWH

    Gas 12093 KWH

    Your Electric Vehicle Quote:

    Tariff Name: Next Drive Fixed

Electricity Day Unit Rate:32.174 Pence Per KWH

Electricity Night Unit Rate:9.500 Pence Per KWH

Electricity Standing Charge:57.031 Pence Per Day

Gas Unit Rate:7.115 Pence Per KWH

Gas Standing Charge:29.112 Pence Per Day

    Yearly Estimated Amount: £4124.82
  • I'm on the Next Drive Fixed tariff.  I don't think it's that bad, basically an Economy 7 type tariff for EV users.  And that's what makes it different from the Octopus tariffs, you get a full 7 hours to recharge your car.  This may or may not be useful; it works for me because I charge slowly using a "granny charger" at the moment.

Car would be 4K kwh a year i think. So most of 6K on peak may not be worth it.

Look at the data, or take some readings if the is no smart meter, What is the daily usage that would be on the peak rate and night base load.
  • Looks like I am better off staying on my current tariff. Thank you all for your help. To my calculation $872 a year with my current tariff and with next drive tariff it would cost me $310 a year to charge my car. With current tariff the rest of my electricity cost $2706 but it cost with new tariff £3268. Gas is extra as well with new tariff but I didn't calculate how much exactly because we spend more in winter obviously. It just doest make sense to be honest 🤷‍♀️ So I will just stay at my current tariff.
