I am due to have my house painted in 2024 but the painter wants a deposit of around £1,000 to book it in. Is this normal and is there any way I can protect it as its a long time ahead and they are just a two man company. Thanks

I have never paid a deposit for such work and would never do unless there was no other way. I would look at other quotes.2

I would only consider a nominal payment (if anything) to secure their services unless they accept credit card payments.

Absolutely no way would I pay anything up front. Imagine how much money he is sitting on if he takes £1000 from all future customers. Get someone else.1

If he wanted 50 quid and is in high demand with a decent track record then maybe, but £1000? Unless he'll take it on a credit card, no chance. In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces1
