Old spark debt not owed but still being pursued
Hi All, Is anyone else still having issues with debt collection agencies regarding Spark energy?
I left them when they collapsed in 2018 and received a final bill, which given that I was paying monthly direct debit and not going into debt was pretty sure I didn't owe.
However, due to not being able to log into the system I didn't know for sure.
In no time I was receiving several letters per week from different debt collectors demanding the sum, so settled with one and paid it in full over time ( finished in 2020). I received a paid in full confirmation so was just glad they would leave me be.
I have started getting emails again this week from a new company demanding the debt be paid. I have sent them the proof that it is settled but they are still demanding the payment.
I have also asked the original company I paid why the debt is still active and they said they can't find my account to sort it out.
Getting really fed up with this now, who do I complain to? I have tried calling citizens advice but am on hold and keep getting cut off as it's very busy apparently.

If you don't know for sure your usage compared to your monthly direct debit there is a chance you do owe a debt.
Dig out old bills and see if they were estimated. How much was the debt?0 -
It sounds like a tale of incompetence on their part.
You could just ignore everything short of a 30-day pre-action letter (I doubt you will ever get one)

This is the standard prove it letter that you can amend to suit: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2607247/letter-when-you-know-nothing-about-about-the-debt-aka-prove-it-letter
The important bits are the reference to the FCA (who regulate debt collection rather than the energy supplier), and that continuing to chase the debt after being given proof it has been settled would constitute harassment.I'm not an early bird or a night owl; I’m some form of permanently exhausted pigeon.1 -
You can ignore anything until they send you a letter in the post. Then the ProveIt letter is your friend.
