Charged for Breakfast at Hotel When Supposed to be Included

Hello all,

My partner and I recently booked a stay in Gdańsk through Expedia.  Part of the package explicitly said that breakfast was included in the price of the package.  Upon checking out, the hotel charged us 130 PLN (Zloty, it’s roughly £24-25) for the four days of breakfasts.  We weren’t advised of the charges at check in and never asked as we both were of the belief it was included.  I queried it with the manager but they said it wasn’t included.  We subsequently paid the charge with the intention of taking it up with Expedia.

On speaking Expedia, they state they have approached the hotel who have refused to refund the money and Expedia have said there is nothing more they can do.  My understanding is that we should not have had to pay the charge but that Expedia would be liable to refund us the money as they sold us a package including the breakfast.

Do I have any options for progressing it?  I am only looking for a refund of the breakfast charge, nothing further as everything else was as advertised.  I know it’s not a lot of money but shouldn’t have had to pay it.

Thank you all for any assistance.

If you have documentation of the Expedia booking showing breakfast included and the hotel bill with the breakfast charge you could try asking your bank for a chargeback.

I have both so I shall try that, thank you.  It’s a credit card I used so I assume I could go through them.

Have you double checked that the types of breakfast matched? I know some have been caught out because their room rate included "continental breakfast" but they had the "full breakfast" (ie they took food from the hot counter) and so had to pay for it (with no "upgrade" pricing being available)?

You go with whichever card provider/bank issued the card you paid with.

The reservation only states breakfast included but did not specify continental or full.  But it’s a good point that I can highlight when making the claim.  Thank you for identifying that to me :)
