Confirming or depositing again a cheque?

I have 5 rail compensation cheques of identical amounts. 2 were deposited using HSBC's app, 3 have not been deposited. They were placed on a desk in 2 piles which made it clear which had been deposited, unfortunately my partner decided to stack them together so now it's not clear which are yet to be deposited. Neither the app nor online banking provide sufficient information. Is there a trick I've missed or will asking the bank be the only way to figure it out? If I attempt to deposit a cheque that has already been deposited will the system recognise and refuse or is there no check? Obviously I don't want it to seem like I'm intentionally trying to deposit twice.

The possible trick you've missed is that, for the paying in cheque apps I've used, they always suggest you write 'paid in' on the back after you've scanned them. That would have solved your problem.

The only way will be to contact your bank, they should hold a copy of the image.  You could contact the issuer but that would likely be way too difficult finding who could actually tell if the cheque had been presented.

Each cheque has an unique number to the left of all other numbers of a cheque.
Open the app up and you should have a picture of the cheques deposited - this should solve your conundrum.

Neither app or online show the image. Where on the HSBC app is it? I tried a number of things and as is unfortunately often the norm with UK online banking or apps there is no detail for the transaction line.

That's kind of the point isn't it otherwise it wouldn't have been asked. Do you have a time machine for OP to borrow?

OP specifically asked what trick they had missed. And the answer is marking which cheque was which.  Which might help them next time. Including for the three remaining un-presented cheques. When they work out which those are. This is being helpful. .

I was a bit more specific actually, I asked: "Neither the app nor online banking provide sufficient information. Is there a trick I've missed or will asking the bank be the only way to figure it out?"

This means was there something in the online banking or app I missed which would show me the details for the cheque that has been paid. You seem to be confirming I haven't missed a trick by saying I should avoid the situation next time, which is not a solution for the current situation, so, no, it's not particularly helpful.

  • With the Lloyds app you can click on deposits and see a picture of a cheque that has been paid in - perhaps HSBC does not have this function in its app?

I accidentally scanned & deposited the same cheque twice , with the HSBC app, a couple of years ago. HSBC just wrote back and told me they rejected the duplicate cheque. No further harm done.

HSBC must still have the scans. If you're not able to view them in the app then call or secure mail (if that's a thing with it) to ask. The cheques must have unique cheque numbers on them.
