Message or twitter then to set it up. Or call them.
It's a method become popular here because of these forums but not necessarily beneficial to the energy companies so that may be why they don't overly promote it.1 -
I once waited ages on hold on phone and once did live chat about an old issue.it took ages and lasted an hour.
I prefer a click of a button on their website.i had a look it showed 2 pdfs rules and conditions for variable and fixed payment plans to download.
but to choose one of them.it only offered fixed only!!!
tbh I hate direct debits.it just I'm with RBS reward account and I get a tiny cash reward per household bill paid DD.
it stems back to a lecturer at college years ago who said avoid DD.its an invitation for companies to be in control.Christians Against Poverty solved my debt problem, when all other debt charities failed. Give them a call !! ( You don't have to be a Christian ! )

this fixed DD is nonsense.thats like going to Tesco buying £200 for month food today and checkout operator billing saying.its £270 cos you may buy Xmas wrapping paper and chocolates and turkey n the trimmings and some brandy and mixers in December.
so we best bill you now .just incase you do. lol
anyway .so where is the button on what page of BG website to pay variable DD.cos I can't find it.
I refuse to do live chat.calls etc.i do all my business with companies.etc rent water council tax via the click of a button on websites.

From many posts here the "new" BG platform - that many customers are or have been migrated to does not support monthly variable direct debit.
But I cannot remember now from those posts what happens to those paying that way on move.
Many - like those on tight fixed incomes prefer annualised DD, but you do have to wonder about the reported cumulative £bns now being held in credit.
My supplier rolled over credit at annual review in April, dropping my DD to use up over 12 months, but decided to reclaim over half of remaining - took 9 working days - from pressing button online.1 -
I prefer pay as you go DD as I can watch my smart meter and turn things off.i don't want BG to be in charge of what they think I will use.
if BG and others are holding onto your money.they are prob getting 5% interest in a gov short term bond account.which they should give bk to customers.
that is how insurance companies make money.they take the float eg your yrly premiums and invest it and they pray very few folk make claims.
that is how Warren buffet made most of his billions
he bought Geico insurance company.
he said it was a money printing machine as customers paid upfront for something they rarely claimed on
and they legally had to have insurance.they had no choice
he took that free money and invested it

There isn't a button on the BG website, you'll have to use Chat (if it's available) and it'll take ages, it's like wading through treacle. Calling isn't much better although it should be straightforward if and when it's eventually answered.BG offered MVDD on their old system (e.g. accounts starting with 8) but apparently not with the new system that's taking over soon.Best to Ditch & Switch ! Octopus offer MVDD if you call them.2

had mega hassle with chat.they took ages to answer and had to repeat questions numerous times.
I'm a guy that just prefers life via doing things my way and online
so much for high tech 2023. when it's the dark ages of having to call folk and wait in a queing system

Back to your original question. If you want monthly variable DD with BG, you'll need to call or message them. And they might not offer it anyway. If you switch to Octopus, you will still need to call or message them to be put onto monthly variable DD. But you'll also have the option to set your own DD level through your account on their website, so you could set a low DD of (say) £10 then pay the rest monthly by card.N. Hampshire, he/him.
